Fibre optic Hull Monitoring System selected for structural safety of new Brazilian FPSO
Hull condition data integrated with digital twin technology will deliver more insight during pre-mission checkouts
Oslo, Norway: Light Structures AS, the world leading supplier of fiber optic condition monitoring systems based on Fiber Bragg Grating technology (FBG) has secured a contract with a prominent Singapore-based shipyard to deliver and install an extensive SENSFIB™ Hull Monitoring System on a newbuild FPSO destined for operation in Brazilian waters.
The FPSO is of the same design as two already under construction in China, both of which feature similar Hull Monitoring Systems. All three SENSFIB™ installations will be ready for integration with high-fidelity digital twins designed to provide unique insight on operations and maintenance.
At 225,000 barrels of oil per day, with a storage capacity of over 1.6 million barrels, and the ability to process gas at 12 million cubic meters per day, the new FPSO also features the same production capacity as the Chinese built FPSOs. It is expected to begin commercial operations in 2026.
“With six SENSFIB™ deliveries for FPSOs secured over the last 16 months, it’s clear that the sector truly sees the value that structural monitoring data offers,” said Niklas Hallgren, Chief Executive officer, Light Structures. “Safety improvements and maintenance process savings are a given, but SENSFIBTM data also unlocks even more accuracy and functionality for the digital twin technology that is now being used to optimize FPSO operations.”

About SENSFIB™
The patented and intrinsically safe SENSFIB™ range unlocks environmental and financial benefits by giving ship owners and operators the potential to avoid incidents before they happen or to gain a deeper understanding of causes during incident investigation. The range includes diverse solutions that can be customized for specific applications such as Hull Stress Monitoring, FPSO Monitoring, Ice Load Monitoring, Sloshing Monitoring, and the customized HullInfo application. In addition to real-time operational data for decision support on board, SENSFIB™ also provides data for Active Fatigue Management reports, which can contribute to reducing operational cost and extending a vessel’s lifetime. Leveraging the reliability and precision of FBG technology, SENSFIB™ provides unique visibility into asset integrity, enabling improved predictive & condition-based monitoring to be integrated in newbuild vessels or retrofits. Data from SENSFIB™F systems is available on dedicated user terminals, through integrated automation and control systems, and as part of IoT networks and cloud-based operational platforms.
